A Community Leader Facilitating A Group Session

This past week, during our training for our new "community leaders" around the world, we saw them struggle with their the concept of their new roles. We searched for a way to help them reflect on their experiences and learn from each others perspectives. The perfect reflection question seemed elusive to us as leaders of this session. We hemmed and hawed and talked it seemed all evening about many things. We decided to sleep on it. When I awoke the next morning, I wasn't clearer on what to ask or how to help "community leaders" who I would soon face again...and I was now feeling the pressure of the moment. I pulled out my Breakthrough cards (I don't leave home with them...) and pulled off the top card, it had a quote from Lao-Tzu quote about " ... they will say, we did this ourselves" was the essence of it. I knew it was the right thing... the Breakthrough! we needed. When our session started, I helped our "community leaders" envision themselves in the future, a year from now and asked them to reflect on what the their "customers" in the organization will say that they have achieved during the year. It worked! It was magical. It was a Breakthrough! for everyone!

I've traveled with Breakthrough! around the world. It has helped me in ways I didn't expect. On a recent trip to Europe, Breakthrough! had an unexpected influence that I thought was worth passing along.

I was preparing the room for a group of leaders from around the world. As I was about to create a "welcome" sign and was wishing I could write welcome in a different languages. When I reached in my bag to get a felt pen, I saw my Breakthrough! card deck. Card 27 was on top with "welcome" written in 9 different languages. Since, I've made a practice of looking through the cards ... I've used the quotes to set up a session ... reinforce a point, or inspire a participant.
