Setting an example for your team is perhaps one of our greatest responsibilities
as a leader. It's easy to forget that our own behaviors and actions set
the tone for those looking to us for leadership. Ask yourself an important
question and think through your answer:
When your team watches you, what do they see?
Print a copy of this page. List the top 5 attributes that you would
most like your employees to see and emulate as they work with you. Rate
yourself.
Consider your current behaviors and actions against attributes, such
as: sets clear expectations, communicates honestly, exemplifies integrity,
acts with fairness, always reliable, values timeliness, produces quality
work, consistently follows-through, creatively solves problems, is thoughtful
risk-taker, respects others, dedicated to mission, acknowledges other's
contributions, reflects a sense of accountability for results... "you
are what you say; you do what you say... ... and when the "going get
tough" do you keep the vision alive for everyone and look for what you CAN
do?
Use the Action Commitment space to jot down personal commitments where
you know your actions and behaviors, if changed, would set a better example
for your team.
