Do-It-Yourself. Steal some quiet time by yourself. Imagine your
organization at a time in the future being "the best it can be".
What would be true about it? Record your thoughts. Below are some considerations
to think about:
- values
- levels of achievement
- team contributions made
- leadership and employee development
- diverse talents that contributed to success
- recognition received
- obstacles overcome
- partners, alliances
- customer satisfaction
- revenue, market-share growth
- best practices and innovations
- risks that paid off
- changes made
- teamwork and strength of community
- flexibility to respond to change
- span of influence
- symbols of success
The next challenge is to shape your thoughts into a message or a few
thoughtfully crafted statements that will help you share your vision of
the future with others and enlist them in it.
Create A Vision - Values Team. Select a cross-section of individuals
(4-6) in your organization to go through the exercise described above as "Do-It-Yourself". You may want to share your own thought and ideas
with them, or even participate in the process. Then set them free to build
your organization's vision. Consider including in the assignment --- methods
of communicating it, promoting it, enlisting others, measuring progress,
and keeping it alive!
Create A Vision Scenario or Story. Stories have been a most effective
means of communicating throughout history. The same concept can serve as
an innovative way to communicate an organization's vision and values, so
that everyone is included and can see his or her part. To try it, tap into
the creative talent in your organization. Let them pick a time in the future
and write a story about the organization from that point-in-time, reflecting
back on the "journey" of risks, struggles, achievements, and rewards.
Give the story a title. Share it with everyone. Publish it. Talk about it
often. Re-evaluate it occasionally.
